Best friends and centenarians Elsie Mayer, 108, and Sylvia Rosen, 100, recently celebrated their birthdays with a big bash at the Independence Neighborhood Senior Center on December 20. The party was hosted by Millennium Development, which operates the center.
Elsie Mayer has been a resident of Independence Towers in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for 42 years. She was born in Poland and moved to the United States with her family when she was 10. She raised three children with her husband Joseph, who died when he was 94. She has lived through two World Wars and 18 U.S. presidents. Her secret to happiness is daily ice cream and cake.
Sylvia Rosen has been a resident of Independence Towers since the development first opened in 1965. She was born in Manhattan and has lived in Brooklyn since she was 9 years old. She had three children with her husband Hyman, who died in 1978.
In addition to Millennium Development and NYCHA staff, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and Assembly Member Joseph Lentol attended the celebration.
A very happy birthday to both residents from NYCHA.
