New Year, Big Changes

It’s January, the season of new beginnings. This month, the country will be experiencing a significant change in leadership. Many New Yorkers are feeling nervous and uncertain about what this could mean for them.

At NYCHA, we are looking forward to continuing our NextGeneration NYCHA work to build safe, clean developments and connect residents to opportunities throughout the five boroughs. The President-elect is a
New Yorker, and he knows the importance of a vibrant city that is home to families of all income levels. He has stressed the need for additional infrastructure investment, and we believe that public housing is an inseparable part of our City’s infrastructure.

We developed NextGeneration NYCHA to overcome federal divestment in NYCHA, leaving us with a nearly $3 billion funding loss since 2001 and buildings sorely in need of maintenance and repair. Although we have a long way to go, we have made progress in our work to strengthen public housing in New York so that it continues to be a pathway to opportunity for this generation and the next. Mayor de Blasio and I believe that NextGeneration NYCHA is not just getting our buildings repaired, developing new affordable housing, and generating some of the funding we no longer receive from Washington. We are also creating public/private partnerships with organizations (like Citi Community Development) which understand the Housing Authority’s value to the City.

In this issue of the Journal, you will read about tools and technology NYCHA created to make your life better, improvements in safety, new affordable housing, and more. We are fully focused on our vision of safe, clean, and connected communities.

It’s not hard to argue the City will benefit from a revitalized, financially stable NYCHA. One in fourteen New Yorkers call NYCHA home, at our developments or through our Section 8 program—a population larger than the city of Miami. For more than 80 years, NYCHA has offered families a stable, affordable home, the foundation for every individual’s success. We are committed to improving the quality of life for residents, and we will continue to move forward by doubling down on our priorities as the nation’s leading public housing authority.

Thank you for your partnership.
